Highlighting the challenges of COVID through fictional narratives, the upcoming season will feature exciting new actors, writers and directors from traditionally underrepresented groups. The Fall 2021 “Unfinished Works” Screenplay Reading and Workshop Series
September 22 @7pm EST; October 20 @7pm EST and November 17th at 8pm EST
The Film Lab will be rolling out three fabulous screenplay readings and workshops as part of our “Unfinished Works” program in which YOU – the audience member – get to become a part of the writer’s creative process! In September, we’ll explore “A Vietnamese Ghost Story,” by Kevin Tran. In October, “Fortune’s Palace” by I-fan Quirk. In November, “The Adventure’s of Tomboy and Gurly Girl” by Keurim Hur. Join us via AAFLTV on YouTube (YouTube.com/AsAmFilmLab) to watch the reading and then move to a private Zoom room to workshop the piece with the writer.

June 3, 2021, 7:30pm EST – 8:00pm EST: The Launch of the 2021 72 Hour Shootout Filmmaking Competition featuring live musical guest THE JENNY THING!
Filmmakers, actors and entertainment types joined the Film Lab online from all over the world with all their last minute questions and for final 72 Hour Shootout filmmaking team building and networking. Film Lab sponsors announced the THEME of the 2021 Shootout, upon which all the Shootout films must be based. Then the clock started ticking and teams had 72 hours to complete their films! The top 10 films will be announced and premiere at the AAIFF in July and the top 50 will be showcased in Film Lab’s award-winning TV series Film Lab Presents in the fall! Watch it here!

Hundreds of filmmakers from around the globe registered to compete in the first ever Isolation Edition Shootout. The Film Lab’s 72 Hour Shootout filmmaking competition challenged these brave storytellers to make a movie in 72 hours based on the theme “GOING VIRAL.” As always, we’re honored to be providing a valuable opportunity for Asian American filmmakers and other filmmakers of color to demonstrate their talent, gain exposure in the entertainment industry and impact the visibility of diverse stories and characters in film. Once the theme is announced, filmmakers have 72 hours within which to create their films. This year is our ISOLATION EDITION. We ask filmmakers to film in the comfort of their own homes and take into account CDC guidelines for the health and safety of themselves and others (https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/index.html). Backstage will be conducting an intensive workshop for our West Coast filmmakers to teach filmmakers, step-by-step, how to utilize all the resources for free (a special code for free services from Backstage Magazine will be given to attendees at the event and to those who register for the 72 Hour Shootout filmmaking competition). In the 72 Hour Shootout, filmmaking teams are given a common theme at the start of the Shootout (usually 8pm EST, the first Thursday of June) and then have 72 hours to write, shoot, edit, and complete short films up to five minutes in length.
